Travel Safety in 2026: The World Hasn’t Become More Dangerous — It’s Become More Complicated

9/21/2026     by Dr. John M. Rose
If there is one thing I have learned after more than three decades in travel risk and security, it is this: most trips go exactly as planned. Millions of people travel every day without incident. The challenge today is not that the world is dramatically more dangerous. The challenge is that it changes faster than ever before.

A political protest can shut down a city in an hour. A wildfire can close an airport with little warning. A cyberattack can disrupt an airline or hotel chain. Severe weather can strand thousands of travelers across multiple countries. None of these events is unusual anymore. They have simply become part of the travel environment.

That does not mean people should stop traveling. Quite the opposite. It means travelers need to prepare differently.

Research & Communication

The first step is understanding your destination before you leave. Take a few minutes to review current conditions. Look beyond the weather. Understand local transportation issues. Know if there are planned demonstrations, elections or major events that could affect movement around the city. A little research before departure can prevent hours of frustration after arrival.

The second step is communication. Make sure someone knows your itinerary. Keep your mobile phone charged and consider carrying a small backup battery charger. Download maps that can be used offline. Store copies of your passport, driver’s license, travel insurance and important reservations in a secure cloud account. If your phone is lost or stolen, you will be glad you planned ahead.

Additional Factors

Cybersecurity is also becoming a much bigger issue for travelers. Public Wi-Fi networks remain one of the easiest ways for criminals to steal personal information. Avoid conducting banking or other sensitive transactions on unsecured networks. Enable multi-factor authentication on important accounts before you travel. These are simple steps that provide significant protection.

Travel insurance deserves special attention. Too many travelers think it only covers trip cancellation. That is simply not true. Depending on the policy, travel insurance may provide emergency medical coverage, medical evacuation, trip interruption benefits, baggage protection and assistance services that become invaluable during an emergency. The key is understanding exactly what your policy covers before you need it.

Medical preparedness is another area that is often overlooked. Carry enough prescription medication for your entire trip plus a few extra days in case your return is delayed. Keep medications in their original containers and pack them in your carry-on bag. If you have a medical condition, carry a brief summary that can be shared with healthcare providers if necessary.

In my opinion, lodging presents the greatest safety and security risk, because it is where travelers spend most of their time and often let their guard down. Whether you are inside the property or exploring the surrounding area, practice good situational awareness, know your surroundings, secure your room and avoid becoming distracted by your phone or other devices. Awareness remains your best defense.

Transportation remains one of the highest areas of risk while traveling. Use licensed transportation providers whenever possible. Confirm your ride before getting into a vehicle. Wear your seatbelt regardless of where you are in the world. These sound like common sense, but they continue to prevent injuries every day.

Stay Informed

One question I am asked frequently is whether travelers should be worried about global conflicts. My answer is usually the same. Be informed, but do not be consumed by the headlines. News coverage often focuses on the most dramatic events. Those events may be hundreds of miles from where you are traveling. Understanding the actual conditions on the ground is far more important than reacting to social media or television reports.

The role of a professional travel advisor has never been more valuable. Advisors do much more than book reservations. They help clients understand changing conditions. They recommend appropriate travel protection. They assist when flights are canceled, borders change or unexpected events occur. Having an experienced professional in your corner can make all the difference when plans suddenly change.

Travel will always involve some level of uncertainty. It always has. The difference today is that information moves instantly, events develop rapidly and travelers have access to better tools than ever before. Good preparation is no longer optional. It is part of being a smart traveler.

The goal is not to eliminate risk, because that is impossible. The goal is to understand it, prepare for it and continue exploring the world with confidence. The vast majority of trips will end with nothing more exciting than great memories, new experiences and the desire to plan the next adventure. That is exactly how travel should be.
